Online or classroom real estate study: choose how you will learn best

Neither online nor classroom delivery is automatically the better choice. Look at how a specific course teaches, supports and assesses you, then check whether you can sustain its schedule.

Start with the assessment, not the label

ASQA’s assessment guidance focuses on clear tasks and sound evidence of skills. Its training guidance also discusses practice, feedback and the risks of online delivery without enough support. The useful test is what students actually do in the course. Assessment practice guide and training practice guide

Ask to see a sample lesson and an explanation of a practical task. How will you practise a client conversation? Who gives feedback? What technology or other people will you need for a role-play? How do you book an assessment?

Those answers reveal more than a photo of a classroom or a promise to study anywhere.

Match the course to your real week

Online study may fit around changing shifts or travel. It can also require you to protect your own study time. Classroom sessions may create a useful routine, but attendance and travel need space in your calendar.

Try a hypothetical planning exercise: mark the hours you could reliably study next week. Then compare that pattern with the actual timetable. Include trainer contact hours and assessment bookings, not only the time spent reading.

If you have been away from study for a while, ask how the provider helps students use its platform, understand tasks and request extra support. Needing help is a planning fact, not a reason to give up on the course.

Be careful with claims about employers

We have not established evidence that Australian real estate employers as a group prefer one delivery mode. Do not treat an unsupported claim about what employers “always want” as a reason to pay more.

If you have a particular employer in mind, ask about the skills and evidence it values. Prepare to explain what you practised and learned. Keep course examples free of private client information.

Check the pathway underneath the format

Whichever mode you choose, verify the RTO, award, unit list and state requirements. ASQA’s student guidance includes delivery mode and equipment among the issues to consider. Choosing a suitable course

What still needs checking

  • No personal eligibility or provider quality is determined. Check your own records and the current official requirements.
